Leadership of the Archdiocese of New Samoa
The Archdiocese of New Samoa is shepherded by dedicated clergy who guide the faithful with pastoral care, humility, and service. While our Archdiocese is small, our leaders carry out their responsibilities with devotion, ensuring that every parish and ministry remains connected to the wider mission of the Church.
Most Rev. Toma Fa’alelei
Archbishop of New Samoa
Archbishop Toma Fa’alelei has led the Archdiocese of New Samoa since 2014. Born and raised in Apia, he was ordained a priest in 1986 and has served in parish ministry, seminary formation, and diocesan leadership. As Archbishop, he emphasizes the importance of strong families, youth formation, and the preservation of faith within Samoan culture.
His leadership is marked by pastoral closeness and a commitment to guiding the Archdiocese with humility and care.
Rt. Rev. Mikaele Tupuola
Auxiliary Bishop
Bishop Mikaele Tupuola was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of New Samoa in 2019. Originally from the coastal village of Leulumoega, he studied theology at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva, Fiji, before entering parish ministry. Known for his pastoral approach and dedication to social teaching, he has worked extensively in rural communities.
As Auxiliary Bishop, he supports parish development, catechesis, and missionary outreach, ensuring that even the most remote communities feel included in the life of the Church.
Very Rev. John P. Mahoney
Vicar General
Father John Patrick Mahoney was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese in 2021. Originally from New Zealand, he has ministered in Samoa for over 20 years as a parish priest and seminary lecturer. Fluent in both Samoan and English, he provides essential administrative support and helps coordinate the daily operations of the Archdiocese.
Known for his practical leadership and openness to modernization, Fr. Mahoney has encouraged the use of technology to extend pastoral outreach. With the Archbishop’s approval, he supported the launch of SinForgive.com, an online initiative designed to guide Catholics in spiritual preparation and encourage their return to parish life.
Our Commitment to Service
Together, Archbishop Fa’alelei, Auxiliary Bishop Tupuola, and Vicar General Mahoney provide both spiritual and administrative guidance for the Archdiocese of New Samoa. Their leadership reflects the mission of the Church: to serve, to teach, and to bring Christ to every community. Whether in the parish, in the home, or through new forms of outreach.
